Systemic Sustainability: An Overview

Picture
The concept of systemic sustainability asserts that it starts with the individual and his/her recognition that change happens through each person.  Given SPMS’ mission statement, it’s clear that there is a commitment at all levels of the school to foster systemic sustainability.  The words are strong: each of us, staff and students alike, has both a duty and an opportunity to contribute to the world in which we live.  The manner in which this message is displayed everywhere for all to see, powerfully complements the words:  each of us has a connection to the environment; each of us has the capacity for the resilience and strength of the osprey, the school’s mascot; each of is part of the Chesapeake Bay Watershed.

This establishes the foundation for the SPMS Green School Program.  It started small and continues to grow, through the efforts of many individuals who are collectively committed, with the hope that it will perpetually thrive.  Specifically, this is accomplished through innovative, engaging, hands-on curriculum within a school system that has established
an established environmental literacy graduation requirement; as well as on-going professional development.

A National Blue Ribbon School, SPMS adheres to high standards for both staff and students; equally committed to an engaging learning process, as it is with the achievement results.  The school’s location between the Magothy and Severn Rivers, and mere miles from the Chesapeake Bay, serves as an inspiration and sets the stage for systemic sustainability.
