Green Courses Across the Faculty

PictureSchool Principal Sharon Hansen participates in environmental stewardship training.
Sharon Hansen, School Principal
Chesapeake Bay Foundation's Maryland Principals Program

Through the "Environmental Leadership for Principals" program, CBF provides high-quality professional learning that meets the evolving needs of administrators and schools. The program supports school principals and administrators in environmental stewardship opportunities for their entire school community. Through experience, training, resources, and collegial discussion these key leaders learn how to design a school program that utilizes and benefits the local environment.
Participants in CBF's principals program are able to gain first-hand experience on the Chesapeake Bay while strengthening their leadership capacity in environmental education. See Mrs. Hansen's certificate here.

All SPMS Staff Members
School-wide Google Classroom Training:
Severna Park Middle School staff received extensive training on the implementation and use of Google Classroom.  This training began before the start of the 2017-18 school year and continued throughout the year.  SPMS transitioned to this digital tool in an effort to greatly reduce paper usage.  Staff can now assign and collect student work digitally as well as communicate with students and parents.  The use of google classroom also allows for quick collaboration and feedback between teacher and students.

Stemscopes Digital Platform Training:
In 2016 Anne Arundel County began the use of a digital platform called "Stemscopes" in place of the traditional text book.  Teachers received training on the use of the platform at the beginning of that school year.  Again, this will greatly reduce the use of paper.  Stemscopes also aligns with Google Classroom, so students can transition to a completely digital work product.

Renee Austin, 6th, 7th & 8th Grade AVID teacher
Initiative and Confidence Training Course and Recertification Course at Arlington Echo:
This workshop will provide the necessary certification required to use the Initiative and Confidence course located at Arlington Echo Outdoor Education Center. The Initiative and Confidence course is designed to develop teamwork and cooperation while promoting risk taking, responsibility, and respect through participation in physically challenging activities and a low-level obstacle course. The recertification course is designed to re-certify persons who have successfully completed the Initiative and Confidence Trainer Workshop. Recertification is required every two (2) years following your instructor training. Limited to persons who were certified 2 or more years ago.

Terrie Hartman, 8th Grade English

Creating Health and Balance in the Classroom:
Research shows that our culture is in a wellness crisis. The impact of stress, poor nutrition, time management, and lack of physical activity on students and teachers alike will be examined in order to better serve educators on both a personal level and in the teaching and learning process.
