Systemic Sustainability: 1.4 Celebration

Earth Day Festival

The Severna Park Earth Day Festival has made its home on our campus for the past 5 years.  We have more than 60 vendors and display booths, all supporting green living here in the Severn River & Magothy River Watersheds.  SPMS staff and students from the Environmental Service Club, Student Government Association, National Junior Honor Society, Youth Rise Leo, and AVID have represented many of the elements of the green school program.

The SPMS booths have offered community activities such as giving out native tree saplings with instructions for planting to be given to homeowners/families, rain barrel and Severna Park re-usable water bottles for sale.  Additionally, NJHS members have worked at the Festival to assist the multitude of vendors with their displays and activities.

And of course, students vie for the opportunity to don the SPMS osprey costume to greet everyone at the festival.

Traveling Mascots

Meet Oakley and Oswald, Severna Park Middle School's very own version of Flat Stanley.

These handmade Ospreys were made for our school by a local artist through a Nature Conservancy program, providing support to an osprey program.

They make their home at SPMS but travel with students often and to many different classes- dance, world language, science and language arts- always bringing with them a connection to the Chesapeake Bay.  Oakley and Oswald joined us in 2013 and the project at SPMS continues to grow, with innovative lessons and integration into various curricula and life at SPMS and beyond!

Our teachers use Oakley and Oswald to always make a connection to the environment- even when planning a social studies unit.

The Ospreys even traveled to Canada in 2017 with the French class. "Balbuzard" is "osprey" en francais!

They traveled on the Festival Band field trips in 2016 with us too!

Embedded Ospreys

Once again, the school yearbook for 2016-2017 calls to mind the SPMS mascot. The everyday reminder of the osprey as part of the school's culture subtly reinforces the community's connection to the natural world and the Chesapeake Bay Watershed. Even the bird's eye view of SPMS via the pages of the yearbook convey this message.

Student designed cover for school agenda book, which every SPMS student is required to use to improve organizational skills and instill responsibility. Students clearly identify with the school mascot! This artwork is now on display in the school for all to see.
