The growing strength and effectiveness of the SPMS Green School program has obviously had a positive impact on the school community; educating the students and staff, engaging people into action, implementing positive change, with real-world benefits.  This has not gone unnoticed outside the SPMS boundaries.

Again, success breeds success.  The effectiveness of the instruction at SPMS, the achievement of the first rain garden, the attainment of the initial grant,  the realization of the pioneer Earth Day Festival and STEM Night; each of these singular accomplishments paved the way for further success and accolades.  The greatest reward: continued, innovative learning opportunities for SPMS students today and beyond.

Girl Scout Gold Award:  Girl Powered Stem Night, May 2018

Severna Park Senior Kate Bray returned to her former middle school to work with her science teachers in an effort to achieve her Gold Award in Girl Scouts.  She conducted research and found out that studies show that 74% of teen girls are interested in STEM and STEM subjects, but in the STEM field, only about 25% of these positions are held by women.  Ms. Shelleman and Kate worked together to bring in 18 different business and community members to run activities and stations for a "Girls Powered Stem Night."  Many of the STEM activities also focused on environmental issues.  Anne Arundel County Recycling, Annapolis Maritime Museum, Eco-Adventures, and Oceaneering International were some of the participants that added a "green" flair to the evening. The event was a huge success.  Over 250 students from 26 different schools attended the evening.  Kate proudly earned her Gold Award by creating an event that will continue into the future!

Environmental Science Winners: Severna Park Middle School

The students of Severna Park Middle School are encouraged to show their interest and appreciation for the environment in many ways.  One such way that students have shown this appreciation is by completing environmental investigations both in their science classes and independently.  These investigations and projects have covered a wide range of environmental issues.  Some of these projects have been chosen to represent SPMS at the annual Regional Science and Engineering Fair.  Better still, many of these projects have stood out amongst their peers throughout Anne Arundel County so much so that they were given awards at this fair.  What a great way for students to show that they have internalized their appreciation for the environment!
