Systemic Sustainability: 1.1 Curriculum and Instruction
6th Grade: Ecosystem Tank
Classroom Ecosystem Tank
One of the offerings of the 6th grade environmental literacy curriculum includes this long-term, hands-on project. Following classroom lessons, a tank and the requisite materials are provided to transform the classroom into a mini ecosystem of sorts.
The ecosystem tank connects the sixth grade ecology unit to the real world and the Chesapeake Bay. Students have the opportunity to get up close with native fish and grasses that grow in the Chesapeake Bay watershed.
With the presence of important species threatened and on the decline, students are tasked with maintaining the tank with the fish and grasses, charting their progress and caring for them.
