Student Driven Practices: 2.2 Energy Conservation

Energy Conservation

The staff and students of Severna Park Middle School accept the challenge to reduce energy usage.
Students knew that they needed to take a greater part and plan to increase their involvement, so a simple marketing plan, via posters and signage on light switches, will be step one to call everyone to action: turn off lights when leaving the room, do the same for devices when not in use, remind each other to do these basic things that add up to a big difference.

8th Grade Lesson & Poster Contest: Alternative Energy

In 8th grade, students are challenged in class to research the different forms of energy- solar, hydroelectric, wind energy and others.  They do a comparison to our current reliance on fossil fuels, and try to find ways to promote alternatives.

The students then used posters to raise awareness of alternative energy and to teach people some simple ways that kids (and their families) can make changes in their own lifestyles to use alternatives that are earth-friendly.  Biking rather than driving was one quick and easy lifestyle change that most kids agreed they could use right away.

Energy Demands: Learning to Plan for the Future

Members of the Environmental Science Club are challenged to play “Energyville”, an interactive game that puts the students in charge of meeting the energy demands of the city, and the opportunities and challenges provided by each energy source.  This knowledge and experience may prove quite helpful in advancing SPMS’ own need to conserve energy.

The Environmental Club learned more about resources from this lesson/game on conservation called Energyville
